Purchase & Reforestation
1
Purchase, so oil companies can't destroy those parts of the rainforest ever again
2
Reforestation, to build back what once was, together with indigenous communities
While the Ecuadorian Amazon is the most species rich tract of Rainforest in the world, Ecuador has the highest deforestation rate and worst environmental record in South America. Oil exploration, logging, and road building have had a disastrous impact on the country’s primary rainforests, which now cover less than 15 percent of the land mass. In 2020, 10,700 hectares of primary forest were cut and 27,237 hectares of tree cover disappeared in the Amazon region.
Consequently, SVSF is especially active in monitoring deforestation, illegal logging, forest fires and implements reforestation projects.
Given the above SVSF in 2023 is launching the purchase of Amazon Rainforest program. We believe that this would be a concrete and permanent solution for Rainforest preservation. The objective is to purchase tracts of primary forest where available with the unnegotiable condition that these will become flora and fauna Nature Reserves in benefit of all future generations. Secondary forest will also be procured and reforested with endemic hard woods from our nurseries. Destroyed and deforested lands will also be acquired.
Under agreement with UNESCO, the purchase of Amazon Rainforest will be incorporated under the umbrella of the Amazon Reserves for Peace.
Presently SVSF owns 200 hectares, which is projected to increase annually by 100 hectares as of 2023.
