The Green Diamond was developed through years of working alongside and learning from the Cofán Shaman Aurelio; the practical experience of our Amazon restoration team—men and women born and raised in the rainforest who live and work within the Amazon Reserves for Peace—and knowledge gained through scientific research and institutional collaborations.

 

It brings these complementary sources of knowledge together within a single restoration methodology.

 

Its purpose is to recreate the structural and ecological conditions from which a primary rainforest can progressively emerge. Rather than simply planting trees, it seeks to restore the living structure and ecological relationships that distinguish a primary Amazon rainforest, allowing ecological succession and natural processes to rebuild its complexity through time.XX

 

Each degraded landscape has its own history, and each restoration project must respond accordingly. Yet the principle remains the same: to create the ecological conditions from which a living rainforest can progressively emerge through time.

 

Every primary rainforest is the product of countless ecological relationships that have developed through time. Trees, plants, wildlife, soils and microorganisms do not exist in isolation. By carefully combining native species that occupy different ecological roles and forest layers, it initiates the long process through which ecological complexity, resilience and biodiversity progressively emerge.

Native Hardwood Nurseries

 

Every rainforest restoration project begins long before the first tree is planted. Within the Amazon Reserves for Peace, SELVA has established specialised native hardwood nurseries dedicated to the progressive recreation of primary rainforest. Unlike conventional reforestation programmes that often rely on a limited number of fast-growing species, our nurseries cultivate a diverse collection of native rainforest trees selected to recreate the structure, diversity and ecological resilience of a living primary forest.

 

Particular emphasis is placed on slow-growing hardwoods that have become increasingly rare through decades of selective logging, including big-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), the locally known caoba veteada, chuncho (Cedrelinga cateniformis), and other native Amazon species that are now seldom encountered across many degraded areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon.

 

More than places where seedlings are produced, these nurseries are living reservoirs of Amazonian biodiversity and the biological foundation of the Green Diamond. Every tree propagated today represents an investment in the ecological integrity of the forests that future generations will inherit, transforming long-term ecological vision into practical rainforest restoration.

 

Restoring Degraded Rainforest Ecosystems

 

No two degraded rainforest ecosystems are the same. Their soils, history of disturbance and remaining biodiversity all differ. For this reason, every Green Diamond is carefully adapted to the ecological conditions of each restoration site.

 

Restoration begins by selecting native species that perform complementary ecological functions. Alongside slow-growing hardwoods, the Green Diamond incorporates species such as higuerones, native palms and other fruit-bearing trees that provide food and habitat for wildlife. The objective is not simply to establish tree cover, but to recreate the ecological relationships through which a primary rainforest progressively develops.

 

The Amazon Reserves for Peace encompass both primary rainforest and areas undergoing progressive restoration through the Green Diamond. Together, they support exceptionally diverse rainforest ecosystems, home to an extraordinary variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and countless other species. Howler, night, capuchin, woolly, spider and squirrel monkeys share these forests with two- and three-toed sloths and an extraordinary diversity of other wildlife. All are free-ranging across the reserves.

 

Their return to areas undergoing restoration is evidence that ecological processes are recovering. Through seed dispersal, pollination and countless other natural interactions, wildlife becomes part of the process through which the rainforest restores itself.

 

SELVA measures the success of the Green Diamond not only by the number of trees planted, but by the ecological relationships it restores, the wildlife it sustains, and the gradual return of a living primary rainforest.

Primary rainforest restoration cannot be achieved in isolation. It depends upon long-term partnerships with Amazon Indigenous communities and local people whose knowledge, experience and enduring relationship with the rainforest are essential to its future.

Every restoration project responds to local ecological conditions, combining scientific understanding, practical field experience and traditional ecological knowledge.
